Where did that idea go?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Background: I settled for bed the other night with a yoga nidra recording playing. As I continued to relax an idea floated to the surface. It wasn’t just any idea, it was an insight, something worth noting, something worth blogging about! It was so good I told myself, “don’t get out of bed, you’ll remember it tomorrow.” So I repeated it one last time to myself, and smiling, continued the yoga nidra.

Yes, you can guess the rest. I woke up the next mornin recalling I’d had a geat idea but the idea itself was nowhere to be found. So for two days now I’ve given my subconscious the mission to find and retrieve it, but no word yet…

Observations: I’ve noted on multiple occasions that memories in the waking state, are non-existent or challenging to recall in the dream state. When we can remember waking memories in dreams, this indicates greater lucidity and is a solid technique for triggering lucid dreams. And dream memories, e.g. dreams themselves, have a slippery quality. How often have you woken up from a dream only to have the details evaporate in seconds. Finally, I have also been aware of recalling previous dreams from within a dream; the memory seemed readily accessible.

Hypothesis: These experiences suggest to me that memories are stored in different spaces in the mind based on the mental state when the initial impression/thought/experience occurred. Waking in waking memory bank, dream in dream m.b. , deep in deep … And more specifically, maybe it works in terms of brain wave states: alpha, beta, theta, delta.

Hence, to get that idea back, I should try getting back into alpha (relaxed, reflecting). What are your experiences with memory retrieval in different states?

Do you know yourself?

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Do you know yourself? Can you recognize yourself if your were to walk by you on the street? Or if you overheard a conversation between you and another? How?

Try this experiment:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position. Feel that the base of the body is supported, spine drawn upwards, shoulders relaxed, head balanced on neck.
  2. Take a moment to feel into the entire body; moving through it part by part if that helps.
  3. Then become aware of your breath. Feel it moving in and out of the nasal passages. Watch it with the attitude of an observer, as if noticing it for the first time. Don’t try and change it in any way (and don’t not try to change it either). Just let it be and watch.
  4. The experiment begins from this point…
  5. See your self in your mind. Which details show up? Can you see your body? Are you wearing clothes? Can you see your face? What color are your eyes? Does the you within the mind have density?
  6. Say something. Does it have a voice? Is it the same you hear when you really speak?
  7. Does it feel emotion?

I think we can recreate ourselves within the mind to the degree that we know really know ourselves. Like an expert potter molding clay with eyes closed; the final product product will reflect his oneness with that he is working with.

What is pleasure and pain?

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I hit my shin against the cross bar of my metal bicycle while dismounting. A strong sensation arose and I had to really focus to stay calm with the pain. At that moment, I asked my self, why am I recoiling rather than rejoicing? What has occurred that I register this as pain and wish these sensations to pass quickly?

What really is pain and pleasure and how do they differ? Pain seems to be what our being recognizes as harmful to us (if repeated). Clearly, there are different types of pain as well – emotional, physical, … Sometimes things that start out painful become pleasurable and vice versa.

Intelligence vs intelligent senses

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

How do we define intelligence? If our very senses were duped how would we respond to the environment? Is our environment more than what are senses tell us?

I think the ability to take action contrary to the information given by the senses marks superior intelligence.

The flame dies but fire still exists

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Even when the flame dies, the concept of fire does not. The flame is a manifestation of That potential to manifest in the form of fire. In the same way, when I die, life does not cease to exist. Though I appear to be an individual, I have no individuality when it comes to life, for it shall continue when I am gone. I am really just an expression of That life potential.

What is life? Where does it go? Did it ever come into being? How do we define life?

Interesting day. Full of internal activity…

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Awareness of bones.

If you are aware of something, then you are not that thing. Then if you are aware of awareness you are not that awareness.

Strong shift in mental and physical state after eating too much decadent tea-time snack. Wonder if it is sign of vata imbalance. Skipping dinner returned me to super calm state.

Enjoyed giving karma yoga talk today. Asked everyone to look all over their bodies and find areas they can’t see; which is mostly the face and back area. For these areas mirrors are required. In the same way, our deepest attitudes towards things are reflected in our actions. When we are doing karma yoga we are constantly engaging in activity with reflective awareness. Noticing our likes and dislikes, preferences, assumptions, tendencies, …

Tomorrow I will talk about how we put on masks but need to wear only one at a time. Otherwise it will cause strain and affect our posture. In the same way, we can maintain our internal posture by wearing only one mask at a time. Today, if you are a gardener then be 100% a gardener. Same if you are a cook, electrician, computer specialist, janitor, driver, or anything else. And fully enjoy it. In karma yoga we have the opportunity to role play; to practice engaging deeply in what we’re doing and letting the results settle as they will. The trick is to fully immerse but not be attached.

Next day, refer to Gita and how karma yoga is just a process for purification. In the same way that we flush stuff down the toilet during the cleanse, in karma yoga the fruits are the effects of the cleanse. Hence we are not ineresting in them for their own sake, we are interested in purifying ourselves.

Technology for progress, not comfort

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

With technological innovations appearing at an increased pace, there is more free time in our lives. Or should be anyways. The days of hand washing clothes and brooming the house are largely replaced by washing machines and vacuums. Microwaves cook 10x as fast and even gas/electric stoves save the burden of collecting firewood.

What impact has technology made on the progress of our lives overall and in what ways can we use existing technologies to improve current situations?

Google idea: govt blog impacts everyone.

idea: comment link on blog should link to duplicate blog so that one copy is the implementation of the comments and the other is a standard blog.

A developing nation, a reborn being

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

We are a developing nation, and as such require the nurturing that is given to any new born creation. Would you treat a growing child the same way you do your motherland? Does it not require love and care and thoughtfulness to mature into a healthy, wholesome state?

Reincarnation is part of our belief system. Recognize that we have been reborn. The Nepal of yore has matured and in many ways perished. Certain branches have grown old and either been cut or broken off. New sprouts are growing in their place. Let us not ignore this new life but rather foster it’s development. Now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to create a new Nepal that keeps all the wisdom and positive culture of the past but is able to adapt to the modernization of the rest of the world. We have the potential to run a 100% clean energy country. How many other nations can even hope for that?

This is the time to foster new habits. Stand up, rise, give your energy in any way possible. Expect nothing in retun except the hope for a tranformed place which we call home. Notice how valuable this land is and how unqiue a people we are. The British could not conquer us. We are a strong people. It is by unique karma that we have taken birth or are in some way connected to this maha-bhumi.
